MIT School students have been proclaimed champions in the XXXVII Spanish Karate Championships for teams, held this weekend in Madrid. The School has had seven representatives in the Spanish capital, and has won six medals: four gold, one silver and one bronze.

This triumph is the second consecutive victory in this tournament for Andalusia, which gathered more than 1.800 competitors from the juvenile to the senior category. For the first time in the history of Spanish karate, a club has placed its kata and kumite team in the Spanish Championship  finals. The kata group, formed by the future teacher Lorenzo Carlos Marin and his colleagues Antonio López and Francisco García, has carried out a masterful championship by defeating all their opponents incontestably. In the final they haven’t left any option of winning to Aragón, which was defeated by 5-0.

In the senior kumite fight, the School was represented again by Marín and Víctor Pérez, also a MIT teacher. The group has reached the final after having a good championship, where they have had a face to face with the La Rioja team. The battle has been fought to the last moment and La Rioja has won the final victory by a narrow 3-2.

Furthermore, the student José Miguel Quesada has achieved a creditable third place in the junior category to the strong teams of Aragón and Madrid. Quesada could not access the fight for the gold after losing in a tight 3-2 in the semifinals before the Aragonese team. However, the defeat did not undermin his mentality and, together with the other components of the junior team, he has won with a convincing 5-0 in the fight for the third place.

The youngest representatives of the School, Alfie Bannister and Paula Quesada, have also qualified for the final of the junior category, and have defeated the Madrid team by a 4-1 that has allowed them to win the gold medal. MIT School has also participated in the technical tests in this category, on which it has been awarded with the gold thanks to these two students. In the female cadet-junior category, María Torres has achieved gold.

These excellent scores are certainly the result of our student’s hard work, who are trained by the best professionals. In fact, only a week ago, the world karate champion José Manuel Egea visited the School to share two days of top-level training in order to face the national championship. We are very proud of our team, which, incidentally, is appearing in many media!
